Children Belong in School, Not at Work!

Preventing offences and violations is one of the most important responsibilities of modern society. One of the most disturbing violations is depriving children of their childhood and involving them in heavy labour.

Unfortunately, children can still be seen working in markets, on construction sites, in fields and in other physically demanding environments. Making children work at an early age negatively affects their health, education, rights and future opportunities.

What does the law say?

Under the legislation of the Kyrgyz Republic, children must not be involved in heavy, dangerous or harmful work that could negatively affect their health or their moral, intellectual and physical development.

The illegal employment and exploitation of minors constitutes a violation of the law and may result in legal liability.

Main risks associated with child labour

Falling behind in education.
A working child may be unable to attend school regularly. As a result, the child could lose the opportunity to receive a quality education and obtain a good profession in the future.

Psychological trauma.
Early responsibility, exhausting work and pressure from adults can have a serious negative impact on a child’s mental and emotional well-being.

Damage to health.
Heavy labour may cause injuries, chronic illnesses or even permanent disability in a growing child.

What should we do?

  1. Do not remain indifferent.
If you see a child performing heavy work or no longer attending school, report the situation to social services, law enforcement authorities or other relevant institutions.
  2. Raise awareness among parents.
A child should not be viewed as a source of income, but as an individual who needs care, protection and education.
  3. Improve legal awareness.
Every employer must understand that the unlawful employment of minors may result in legal liability.

A child should hold books and pens, not heavy tools.

Let us work together to protect every child’s right to a happy and safe childhood and quality education. Preventing violations in our society is the responsibility of each of us.
